History of Kite Festival
Thailand’s kite flying tradition dates back over 700 years, particularly during the Ayutthaya period (14th century).
It is traditionally celebrated during the dry and windy season (March–May) when the skies are clear and winds are ideal for flying kites.
Thai kings, especially King Rama V, encouraged kite flying as a royal pastime and national sport.
The Chula and Pakpao kites (male and female kites) are iconic to Thai kite battles—a tradition where teams try to “capture” each other’s kites in the sky.
Kite festivals draw local families and international tourists, promoting cultural exchange, art, and craftsmanship.
It supports tourism, preserves Thai heritage, and brings communities together.
